The number of traffic camera citations in Colorado doubled from 2015 to 2016, according to the Colorado Department of Public Safety.
And the number of violations, per capita, doubled from $7,922 in 2015 to $12,734 in 2016.
The department has also reported that Colorado’s traffic cameras have led to more than 20,000 citations in the past year.
The city of Denver is looking to expand the number and scope of its camera fleet, with plans to install more than 100 cameras, expand the coverage area and create a new enforcement unit to deal with speeding.
The City of Denver said the program will cost the city $20 million.
The new cameras will be installed on city streets and in other areas that have cameras already in place.
But officials said the city will also deploy them at intersections and other places where a public safety issue is likely to occur.
“We will be expanding our existing traffic camera fleet to include a new unit for enforcement of speeding,” said Brian Waddell, Denver’s director of public safety.
“We will also have additional units in place at intersections to ensure enforcement of the speeding laws, and we will be adding additional cameras to the network.”
Waddell said that as of Friday, the department had installed 5,500 cameras and has plans to add another 1,500 in the next two weeks.
The program will include a public health and safety unit, which will focus on speeding, vehicle violations, drunk and drugged driving and reckless driving, Waddll said.
The Denver Police Department also is deploying more traffic camera enforcement units in the city, according a city spokesperson.
The cameras are being deployed at the city’s intersections to provide safety enforcement, according the spokesperson.
“The City is taking a new approach to traffic enforcement and we are working to increase the speed limit at the intersections where cameras are in place,” Waddill said.
Waddill says that Denver has been the first city in the nation to install traffic cameras.
Denver had a total of 17 cameras installed in 2015, including two traffic cameras in each of its three city neighborhoods.
